The Malaysian government will launch hub facilities in Japan and other foreign countries to help issue certificates for 'halal' products. Halal is the designation the products are all right for Muslims to consume under Islamic law.

Malaysia is the only nation in the world that has a certification system for halal products. It issues halal certificates for food, cosmetics and other products that Muslims use. Halal goods must be free from pork and alcohol-derived ingredients.

On Wednesday, representatives from Malaysia's government-run corporation, Japanese trading firms, and Hong Kong companies, singed a business tie-up agreement in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. They will set up facilities in Tokyo and in other foreign cities.

The Malaysian corporation will send experts to the facilities to lecture on a basic understanding of the halal system and its application. The experts will also inspect factories, provide guidance, and issue halal certificates to manufacturers.

The facilities are expected to make it easier for Japanese firms to enter the halal business as well as to increase exports to Malaysia, neighboring Indonesia, and Middle Eastern Islamic nations.

Malaysian International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed expressed hope for Japan's venture into the halal business. He said the industry is open to the world and not limited to Muslim companies.
